Day 11: Saint Michael's Mount
Making Pasties
Our first stop today was to make pasties. We went to Marion’s Portreath Bakery, home of fine Cornish baking. Marion was an inspiration and a great story teller. She turned a difficult childhood into a flourishing career. She has multiple restaurants, is an international spokesperson for pasties, has been part of writing a book, opened a gluten-free bakery and supplies basically all of the UK with gluten free goods. She dropped so many great quotes like keeping busy gave her “less time for murder.” She also told us not to limit kids by telling them what they could or couldn’t do. She told us all to find her joy. Hers is in cooking and chasing business dreams. Her wisdom and insights made this much more than a baking lesson. She went on to teach us about pasties before eventually leading us through making our own. I made a bit of a mess out of mine and needed a band aid put on it. Pam’s turned out great! Since Marion runs a gluten free bakery, Pam got to eat a gluten free one and give the one she made to our bus driver, Ian. Marion also showed us some traditional desserts and gave us samples. Delicious, informative, and fun. |
Hell's Mouth & St. Michael's Mount
Then it was on to Saint Michael’s Mount. On the way, we stopped at Hell’s Mouth, the area where a large part of the seashore cliff fell into the water a few years ago. The Heather was blooming, and it was beautiful. When we got to St. Michael’s Mount, we had to take the boat over since it was high tide when we got there. We walked through the island area and learned about the castle that started as a monastery and is now a residence that has been given to the heritage society. Then we walked back, we were able to take the land bridge. It was pretty cool how the tide offered two ways to get over there. |
