Day 10: Coastal Cornwall
Lanhydrock
We headed out for the day about 9 am for Lanhydrock, a national trust site. On the way, we stopped at a train museum with a working steam engine. They were loading it it up when we were there. Further along, we saw a car boot sale where they sell out of their trunks (boots). It’s like a garage sale, and there were lots of cars backed up trying to get in. Lanhydrock is an estate donated to the trust. It had been built in the 16th century, but most of it burned down. It was rebuilt in state of the art modern style (at the time). There were huge grounds around it and amazing gardens. We stayed there from about 10:30 to 2:00. We even found some scones and clotted cream and strawberry jam for lunch. |
Padstow and Poldark
On the way back, we stopped at the port town of Padstow, a famous old fishing village that is a favorite of locals on holiday. It’s along the Camel River and home of Rick Stein, the famous chef. There were great views of the river, and it was an interesting stop. Next we stopped along the coast near our hotel for views over the sea. It’s the area where they filmed Poldark. The Bethruth cliffs were very beautiful. |
